Lindlar Catalyst

Lindlar catalyst is a heterogeneous catalyst for selective catalytic hydrogenation, which is made of palladium adsorbed on a carrier (such as calcium carbonate or barium sulfate) and a small amount of inhibitor (such as lead acetate or quinoline) added. Its chemical composition is usually Pd-CaCO3-PbO/Pb(OAc)2 or Pd-BaSO4-quinoline, in which the palladium content is 5% to 10%12.

Technical Parameters

Product name: Lindlar catalyst

CAS No.: 53092-86-7

Palladium content: 5% ~ 10%

Carrier: CaCO3, BaSO4

Physical properties and storage conditions

Lindlar catalyst is a heterogeneous catalyst, insoluble in water and organic solvents. It is stable to air and moisture, but contains heavy metals, and protective gloves should be worn during operation. Storage conditions are 2-8°C, protected from light, and protected by inert gas.

Application areas

Lindlar catalyst is mainly used for selective catalytic hydrogenation reactions, especially in the hydrogenation of alkynes. It can make alkynes add only 1 mol of hydrogen to generate cis-olefins without affecting other functional groups. Due to its mild reaction conditions and insensitivity to other functional groups, the catalyst has been widely used in the synthesis of drugs and flavors.

Reaction Mechanism and Chemical Properties

The Lindela catalyst allows the hydrogenation of alkynes to remain at the olefin stage to form cis-olefins through the "poisoning" and "deactivation" mechanisms. The reaction is generally carried out at room temperature and atmospheric pressure and is usually completed within minutes to hours. Adding a catalytic amount of pyridine or quinoline can further reduce the reaction rate and improve the selectivity of the reduction.
