How Does Activated Carbon Remove Ozone?

10 Jan , 2025

There are mainly several methods of removing ozone by activated carbon:

Activated carbon adsorption method: Activated carbon has good adsorption properties and can adsorb ozone molecules, making them stay on the surface of activated carbon, and reduce the ozone concentration through physical adsorption. This method is suitable for low-concentration ozone environments, but has limited effect in high-concentration environments, and activated carbon needs to be replaced or regenerated regularly.

Catalytic decomposition method: The decomposition of ozone into oxygen is accelerated by the action of a catalyst. This method is carried out at room temperature and has the advantages of high efficiency, stability, safety and economy. It is currently an ideal method.

Thermal decomposition method: In a high-concentration ozone environment, ozone can be converted into oxygen through thermal decomposition or combustion by heating the gas to about 400°C. Although this method is effective, it consumes a lot of energy and is costly.

Electromagnetic wave radiation decomposition method: Use ultraviolet or near-infrared rays to irradiate ozone to promote its decomposition. This method requires specific equipment and technical support.

‌Pharmaceutical liquid absorption method‌: Use chemical reagents such as sodium thiosulfate or sodium sulfite to absorb ozone, but the treated waste liquid needs to be properly handled to avoid secondary pollution‌.
