Application of Activated Carbon in PSA Adsorption

19 Jul , 2024

The application of activated carbon in pressure swing adsorption is mainly reflected in its wide application as an adsorbent in natural gas concentration research, hydrogen purification and other gas treatment processes.

Natural gas concentration research: Activated carbon is widely used as an adsorbent in natural gas concentration research because its surface is hydrophobic and the adsorption of non-polar molecule CH4 is less affected by water. In addition, activated carbon also has the advantages of large specific surface area, developed pore structure, stable chemical properties, acid and alkali resistance, high mechanical strength, easy regeneration and low cost, making it an ideal natural gas concentration adsorption material1.

Hydrogen purification: In the process of hydrogen purification, activated carbon is used as an adsorbent, and pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology can be used to achieve efficient purification of hydrogen. PSA technology has the characteristics of high purity, low energy consumption and high degree of automation, and is the main separation technology for hydrogen production at present. Optimizing the pressure swing adsorption process and improving the adsorbent are the keys to the further development of PSA hydrogen production, and activated carbon plays an important role in the hydrogen purification process due to its excellent adsorption performance2.

Other gas treatment processes: Activated carbon is also widely used in gas treatment, sewage treatment, desulfurization and denitrification, solvent recovery, nitrogen generators, air separation equipment, paint shops and other fields for the purification of toxic gases, waste gas treatment, industrial and domestic water purification, etc. Columnar activated carbon, as a high-quality adsorbent, is made of high-quality coal, coconut shells, and sawdust as raw materials. It is processed through a series of production processes and has a black cylindrical particle appearance. It is widely used in various gas treatment processes3.

In summary, the application of activated carbon in pressure swing adsorption is not limited to natural gas concentration research and hydrogen purification, but also plays an important role in other gas treatment processes, showing its broad application prospects as an adsorbent.
